Early Years and Foundation stage
Welcome to our Early Years and foundation stage page. We hope this page will help to answer any questions you may have regarding the provision we provide here at Manor Park Academy.
The Early Years Curriculum:
The early years curriculum is curriculum is used in nursery and reception to inform planning of activities for all children.
Activities are carefully planned and organised in order to provide a range of learning experiences. Planning for each term is carried out using a topic based approach, following the children's interests and responding to specific events.
There are seven areas of learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) that activities are planned around:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development,
Communication and Language,
Understanding the world,
Expressive Arts and Design.
Throughout the school year, staff will record children's learning in their personal folder which will form a record of work. Each child's folder will contain samples of work, photographs and staff observations. These folders enable staff to track progress and attainment and plan for future activities.
We currently use Tapestry, which is an online assessment and communication tool which can be accessed by staff and parents/carers. When a child in enrolled at Manor Park parents/carers will be given information and an individual login for their child's account.

At Manor Park Academy Nursery we believe that a child's first experience of school should be enjoyable and provide them with opportunities to achieve their maximum potential.
Full and part time positions are available.
Part time: 8.30am - 11.30am,
Full time: 8.30am - 3.30pm.
Parents/carers must ensure that their child is receiving suitable full time education at the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday. However, in Birmingham, children are able to start school in the September following their fourth birthday. For more information please visit birmingham.gov.uk/schooladmissions.
Reception places are offered on a full time bases Monday- Friday 8.45am-3.15pm.
Getting your child ready for reception.
Please ensure your child is fully toilet trained,
Encourage your child to dress themselves e.g independently zip up their coat,
Start to look at their name and recognise the initial sound,
Provide a spare set of clothes as children sometimes do have accidents,
Encourage your child to use a knife and form correctly,
Both nursery and reception lunch time runs from 11.45am- 12.45pm. All children eat in the dining hall then have access to the outdoor play area. Children can choose from a wide variety of foods including our fresh salad bar. All meat served is Halal. Children in reception are entitled to free school meals. If you wish for your child to bring in a packed lunch, please ensure they have a lunch box or bag that is clearly labelled with their name and class.
Reading and Phonics
Read Write Inc. Phonics (RWI) teaches children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. At Manor Park Academy, children in Reception and Year 1 are taught daily using RWI. There are also additional groups from Year 2 -Year 6 who receive this approach to the teaching of reading. Children are grouped based upon what they already know and what they need to learn next in order to become a fluent reader.
Children learn the English alphabet code: first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes.
They experience success from the very beginning. Lively phonics books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency increases.

These are common words that cannot be sounded out in ‘Fred Talk’ (Fred is a frog used in RWI – he can only speak in sounds!) Ask your child to tell you all about Fred.
